2009“alCANTARaMANUEL” was born from my love of poet Manuel Alcántara’s work; from my consummate connection with the lyricism and intimacy of his poems, and from my desire to reproduce, uniquely and respectfully, the words I believed Manuel would sing if he were to narrate his reflections through song rather than words.

2008I think it was April 2005 when I received the news that the Labèque sisters wanted to collaborate with me on a project based on Spanish music. My heart swelled with pride when I realised that among all the voices that Katia and Marielle could have chosen to bring their project to life, they chose mine. I can honestly say that if I had to choose today, between experiencing either the human or the artistic side of the Labèque sisters, I would choose the first. I have never met two more charming, exquisite, generous women in possession of such extraordinary talent and compassion.

2000Querencia is the word that best defines the raison d’etre behind this work. It had been a long time since I had used flamenco music to pour so much of myself into an album. And it’s wonderful to recall your musical roots, with no constraints or immobility, with no limitations. I believe that limits are always imposed by people who are incapable of crossing them, and flamenco is my origin, not my yoke.
It has also been incredibly rewarding to realise that evolution, for which I thank time for every day, does not consist in perfecting technique, but in learning how I can work with it and transmit what I feel despite it. -

1996A bolero is a familiar nocturnal melody, fragrant and fruity. It can make you cry, worship, embrace like ivy. It can extinguish a burning love that brings more suffering than loving; make you forget about time, the world and everything in it; show you the light on the other side of the moon; remove the imprint of old kisses with kisses from other mouths; ask a clock to stop ticking. A bolero is a last chance to slash your wrists with the edge of a metaphor before doing it with a bread knife.
